SUMMARY:SAVA | JHB Branch Online Event: Fundamental Differences in the Management of Orthopaedic Disease in the Feline Patient
DESCRIPTION:Subject: Fundamental Differences in the Management of Orthopaedic Disease in the Feline Patient\nSpeaker: Dr. Ross Elliott\nSponsor: SAVA JHB Branch\nLINK: REGISTER HERE \nCats have been long considered small dogs and most of our veterinary knowledge in terms of treating feline patients comes from work done in dogs. This is far from the truth unfortunately\, cats have fundamental anatomical\, physiological and lifestyles compared to dogs. In the last 10 years there has been a surge in the number of feline specific papers looking at the best course of treatment in the feline patient. In this Webinar we will look at the intrinsic differences in the feline anatomy\, physiology and environmental demands placed on the feline patient in terms of the musculoskeletal system and how we can use the recent literature to provide the best course of treatment for our feline patients in terms of orthopaedic disease. \nDr. Ross Elliott\nBVSc\, MMedVet (Surg)\, Diplomat ECVS\nDr Ross Elliott qualified from Onderstepoort in as a veterinarian 2005. He worked in private practice at the Bryanston Veterinary Hospital where he earned his MMedvet in small animal surgery in 2011 under Drs Bruce and Greg Irvine-Smith. This allowed Ross to register as a surgical specialist with the South African Veterinary Council. He continued to work as a senior specialist in private practice until 2020\, when he returned to Onderstepoort to take up the position of senior lecturer of small animal surgery in the companion animal clinical studies department and start a residency for the European college of veterinary surgeons. He has completed the residency in 2023 and was deemed board ready to sit the exam. In 2025 Ross passed the exam and is a registered small animal surgical specialist in Europe\, the UK and Hong Kong. Ross is currently working at Valley Farm Veterinary hospital. \nONLINE EVENT REGISTRATION RATES\nJohannesburg Branch Member – FREE\nPretoria Branch Member – FREE\nSAVA Memeber – R70\nNon SAVA Memeber – R90\nVeterinary Nurse – FREE\n*CPD will only be uploaded after full payment. \nPAYMENT LINK – https://savaevents.co.za/ \nDisclaimer: This information is exclusively intended for registered veterinary and para-veterinary professionals.

SUMMARY:HILL'S | Webinar #4: CKD\, Phosphorus & Calcium: A Complex Relationship [WATCH RECORDING]
DESCRIPTION:Subject: CKD\, Phosphorus & Calcium: A Complex Relationship\nSpeaker: Dr Lisa Restine\nOrganizer: Hill’s Pet Nutrition\nLINK:  WATCH RECORDING \nTo register for this webinar\, you will now need to log in to the Hill’s Veterinary Academy (HVA) Platform.\nTo register\, users will need to sign into HVA and navigate to the “Register for Live Events” tab.\n \nThis presentation explores the pathophysiology and management of feline chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorder (CKD-MBD)\, focusing on the complex relationship between phosphorus\, calcium\, and hormones like fibroblas growth factor-23 (FGF-23) and parathyroid hormone.\nAs kidney function declines\, phosphorus retention triggers an increase in FGF-23 and a decrease in calcitriol\, eventually leading to renal secondary hyperparathyroidism and potential complications such as soft tissue mineralization or decreased bone density.\nManagement strategies emphasize early diagnostic assessment using FGF-23 as a predictive marker and implementing nutritional interventions\, such as phosphorus-restricted renal diets and the strategic use of phosphate binders to maintain serum phosphorus within target ranges.\nThis presentation highlights the importance of regular nutritional assessments and monitoring ionized calcium and phosphorus levels to prevent or address issues like hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia during management. \nDr Lisa Restine\nBSAS\, DVM\, Dipl. ABVP (Feline)\nLisa grew up in New Jersey\, USA where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Rutgers University. She later received her DVM degree from Western University of Health Sciences in Southern California in 2014. Since graduation\, Dr Restine had been practicing feline medicine exclusively at a cat- only practice in San Antonio\, Texas where she achieved board certification with the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in feline medicine\, in 2020. In 2022\, she started working at an ER/Specialty Center and practiced on both dogs and cats in an emergency setting. Her real passion\, however\, is feline medicine\, and she has dedicated many hours to lecturing other veterinarians on both a national and international level as well as being a co-editor of a veterinary feline textbook. Outside of work\, Lisa has a strong interest in all things active – she is often found running or hiking and is currently enjoying the challenge of training for a marathon. Caring for her five cats Gandalf\, Ruby\, Macklin\, Deku\, and Minerva takes up the rest of her time. Dr Restine is passionate about sharing her love of practice and knowledge to help improve feline care. \nDisclaimer: This information is exclusively intended for registered veterinary and para-veterinary professionals.
