SUMMARY:SAVA | JHB Branch: Fluid Therapy During Anaesthesia of Small Mammals including Rabbits\, Guinea Pigs and Rats
DESCRIPTION:Subject: Fluid Therapy During Anaesthesia of Small Mammals including Rabbits\, Guinea Pigs and Rats\nSpeaker: Dr Dorianne Elliott\nSponsor: Idexx\nLINK: REGISTER HERE \nFluid therapy is a critical component of gold standard intra-operative care of small mammals. Due to their tiny size and fast metabolisms\, metabolic derangements can occur quickly during anaesthesia and appropriate fluid therapy can counteract many of these complications. Pre-operative bloods are also extremely useful in triaging and selecting patients suitable for surgical procedures. In this talk we will address i/v line placement\, appropriate fluids and rates and which pre-op bloods are useful for the 3 species discussed. \nDr Dorianne Elliott \nDVN\, BVSc\nDr Dorianne Elliott qualified from Onderstepoort in 2002 after completing first a nursing diploma and then a BVSc. She then worked at the Bird and Exotic Animal Hospital for 22 years\, 17 of which she was the owner of the clinic. Since closing the practice in 2023 she has been working as an Avian and Exotic Animal veterinarian at Valley Farm Animal Hospital. Dorianne is passionate about educating clients and vets on the proper care of exotic animals and has lectured the undergrad vets and nurses and presented numerous times at both South African and international congresses. She is a published author of papers on exotics and has talked on radio and television about their care. Dorianne is a falconer and raptor rehabilitator and also has many rescued exotics including parrots and reptiles.. \nIN PERSON EVENT RATES \n(Includes Dinner and Drinks)\nJohannesburg Branch Members – Free\nAll Other participants R325 \nhttps://savaevents.co.za/ \nDisclaimer: This information is exclusively intended for registered veterinary and para-veterinary professionals.

SUMMARY:HILL'S | Webinar #3: What Progesterone Can\, and Can't\, Tell You
DESCRIPTION:Subject: What Progesterone Can\, and Can’t\, Tell You – A practical guide to interpreting progesterone results in small animal practice.\nSpeaker: Dr Geoff Brown\nOrganizer: Hill’s Pet Nutrition\nLINK:  REGISTER HERE \nTo register for this webinar\, you will now need to log in to the Hill’s Veterinary Academy (HVA) Platform.\nTo register\, users will need to sign into HVA and navigate to the “Register for Live Events” tab.\n \nSerum progesterone measurement has become an accessible and widely used tool in small animal practice. It can assist the general practitioner in identifying conditions such as ovarian remnants\, pyometra and stump pyometra\, as well as guiding breeding management and the timing of elective Caesarean section. \nHowever\, like all laboratory diagnostics\, progesterone results must be interpreted in the context of the patient’s history and clinical findings. A single number on a laboratory report can easily create client pressure\, diagnostic uncertainty\, and occasionally clinical confusion. \nIn this practical webinar\, specialist veterinarian Dr Geoff Brown explores how progesterone testing can be used effectively in everyday practice. Using real clinical scenarios\, he discusses what progesterone results actually tell us\, what they don’t\, and how they should be interpreted alongside the clinical picture. \nAlong the way\, the discussion briefly touches on the broader principles underlying diagnostic testing\, using progesterone as an example of how laboratory results should be integrated with clinical reasoning. \nThis session is designed for the conscientious general practitioner who wants a clear and practical framework for interpreting progesterone results in everyday practice. \nDr Geoff Brown\nBVSC\, MMedVet(Gyn)\, PhD\, MRCVS\nGeoff is a specialist veterinarian in animal reproduction and runs Bestbred Veterinary Reproduction Services in Gauteng. He completed his residency in theriogenology at the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Veterinary Science\, where he later worked as a clinician in the Section of Reproduction. \nAlthough he now works primarily in private practice\, Dr Brown remains actively involved in research and teaching\, and enjoys helping veterinarians translate reproductive physiology into practical clinical decision-making. \nDisclaimer: This information is exclusively intended for registered veterinary and para-veterinary professionals.

SUMMARY:PURINA | The Intersection of Diet and Behavior
DESCRIPTION:Subject: The Intersection of Diet and Behavior\nSpeakers: Multiple\nOrganizer: Purina\nLINK: REGISTER HERE \nNutrition plays a fundamental role in behavior and cognition by influencing neurodevelopment and nervous system functioning across life stages. Diet is the primary source of critical active nutrients such as vitamins\, fatty acids\, proteins\, and fiber\, which either directly act on the nervous system or indirectly regulate important systems such as the microbiota–gut–brain axis. Another critical aspect of maintaining optimum nutrition in veterinary patients is recognizing the impact of past experiences and learning on feeding behavior. \nLearning objectives\nAfter this webinar\, attendees will be able to:\n▪ Describe the pathways through which the microbiome influences behavior and which dietary factors are most important to the gut–brain axis.\n▪ Describe the impact of alpha-casozepine\, fatty acids\, and vitamins on cognition and behavior.\n▪ Explain the types of learning that can impact feeding behavior.\n▪ Explain steps pet caregivers can apply to improve feeding behavior. \nThis program is RACE approved for 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions that recognize RACE approval. \nDisclaimer: This information is exclusively intended for registered veterinary and para-veterinary professionals.

SUMMARY:IDEXX | April VetSpecialist Exchange Webinar: Electrolytes in Critical Care: Navigating Complex Imbalances
DESCRIPTION:Subject: Electrolytes in Critical Care: Navigating Complex Imbalances\nSpeakers: Dr. Alessio Vigani\nOrganizer: Idexx\nLINK: REGISTER HERE \nDescription: \nElectrolyte disturbances are common in critically ill patients and are associated with worse clinical outcomes. Although electrolytes are routinely monitored in intensive care units (ICUs)\, their exact prevalence and prognostic impact in medical ICU populations remain incompletely defined. Critically ill patients are particularly susceptible to both depletion and excess of key electrolytes\, which may arise from underlying disease processes and can contribute to clinical deterioration. Multiple electrolyte abnormalities often occur simultaneously and may share a common underlying cause. While some imbalances are transient or asymptomatic\, recognizing and addressing them is essential because uncorrected disturbances are more frequently observed in non-survivors than survivors. Management should prioritize identifying and correcting the underlying cause while adjusting electrolyte intake\, clearance\, or distribution as needed. Because ICU patients have complex and dynamic conditions\, electrolyte therapy must be individualized and carefully monitored to avoid harm. \nSpeaker: \nAlessio Vigani is currently professor and medical director of emergency\, critical care and extracorporeal therapy at The University of Zurich Small Animal Hospital. Alessio received his D.V.M. degree Summa Cum Laude from the University of Milan in 2006 and then obtained his PhD degree in clinical sciences. He completed a small animal rotating internship at the Ohio State University in Columbus in 2009. He subsequently pursued two consecutive residency programs in veterinary anesthesia and analgesia and emergency and critical care at the University of Florida. He is an ACVAA diplomate since 2012\, ACVECC diplomate since 2014\, and ECVECC diplomate since 2019. He previously worked as Clinical Assistant Professor in Emergency\, Critical Care and Extracorporeal therapy at North Carolina State University from 2015 until 2019. His special interests include acute kidney injury\, extracorporeal blood purification\, regional anesthesia in critical care\, and hemodynamics. \nDisclaimer: This information is exclusively intended for registered veterinary and para-veterinary professionals.
