SUMMARY:SAVA | JHB Branch: Recognising Endocrine Disease on Initial Assessment
DESCRIPTION:Subject: Recognising Endocrine Disease on Initial Assessment\nSpeaker: Dr Remo Lobetti\nSponsor: Royal Canin\nLINK: REGISTER HERE \nThis presentation provides a practical overview of recognising endocrine disease during the initial clinical assessment in dogs and cats by using history\, physical examination\, routine laboratory testing\, and ultrasonography to identify patterns that suggest common and less common endocrine disorders. By highlighting key clues\, the presentation reinforces the principle that endocrine disease is often missed not from lack of knowledge\, but from failure to consider it early in the diagnostic process. \nDr Remo Lobetti \nBVSc (Hons)\, MMedVet (Med) PhD\nRemo Lobetti graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Science\, Onderstepoort\, University of Pretoria in 1987. In 1990 completed a BVSc (Hons)\, 1995 an MMedVet (Med) degree\, and a PhD in 2005. In 1997 achieved board certification by the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Remo worked in general practice before joining the Department of Medicine\, Faculty of Veterinary Science\, University of Pretoria in 1992 initially as senior lecturer\, then associate professor and then as Section Head of Small Animal Medicine. From 2001 to 2022 was an internist at Bryanston Veterinary Hospital in Johannesburg. From 2022 to 2025 joined Veterinary Specialists Ireland to set up an Internal Medicine service. Currently back at Bryanston Veterinary Hospital as an internist. He is actively involved in teaching and has presented numerous papers both locally and internationally and has written and co-authored numerous scientific papers\, review articles and book chapters in various aspects of small animal medicine. \nIN PERSON EVENT RATES \n(Includes Dinner and Drinks)\nJohannesburg Branch Members – Free\nAll Other participants R325 \nhttps://savaevents.co.za/

SUMMARY:IDEXX | March VetSpecialist Exchange Webinar: Diagnosing Canine Lympoma: Choosing the Right Test\, Not Just the Best One [WATCH RECORDING]
DESCRIPTION:Subject: Diagnosing Canine Lympoma: Choosing the Right Test\, Not Just the Best One—An Evidence-Based Comparison of Ancillary Diagnostic Techniques\nSpeakers: Dr. Chiara Leo\nOrganizer: Idexx\nLINK: WATCH RECORDING \nDescription: This lecture provides a critical review of the current literature on diagnostic techniques for canine lymphoma\, focusing on ancillary tests such as cytology\, histopathology\, immunohistochemistry\, flow cytometry\, and PARR. Rather than ranking tests by theoretical performance alone\, the presentation compares sensitivity\, specificity\, turnaround time\, costs\, and real-world practicality. The goal is to help clinicians choose the most appropriate diagnostic pathway for each patient and clinical context\, avoiding both under- and over-diagnosis. \nSpeaker: \nDr Chiara Leo began her university training convinced she would pursue an equine career; however\, this path shifted after a formative cytology course sparked a fascination with cells\, making the transition to oncology a natural next step. At the time\, a formal oncology training pathway was not available in Italy\, prompting a significant personal and geographic change. She completed an oncology internship at the Tierspital\, University of Zurich (Switzerland)\, followed by an ACVIM residency in Medical Oncology at the Animal Oncology and Imaging Center in Zug (Switzerland)\, which included externships at Washington State University (USA). \nFrom 2011 to 2016\, she served as Lecturer in Oncology at the Royal Veterinary College (London\, UK) and was appointed ad interim Head of the Oncology Service from 2015 to 2016. During this period\, she also adopted Arturo\, a gentleman dog rescued from a London kennel\, who has been her constant companion ever since. \nAfter nearly a decade abroad in Switzerland\, the United States\, and the United Kingdom\, a strong pull toward her homeland and the Alps led her back to Italy in 2016. She became Head of the Oncology Service at AniCura Istituto Veterinario Novara and Scientific Director of UNISVET\, one of Italy’s largest veterinary continuing education organizations. \nShe currently serves as Internship and Residency Program Manager for Mars Veterinary Health Europe and is Secretary of the European Society of Veterinary Oncology (ESVONC). \nDisclaimer: This information is exclusively intended for registered veterinary and para-veterinary professionals.

SUMMARY:HILL'S | Webinar #2: Beyond the Brain: How Gut Health Influences Emotional well being in Pets
DESCRIPTION:Subject: Beyond the Brain: How Gut Health Influences Emotional well being in Pets\nSpeaker: Ilse Fourie\nOrganizer: Hill’s Pet Nutrition\nLINK:  REGISTER HERE \nIn recent years\, the gut microbiome has emerged as an important biological system influencing not only physical health\, but also emotional regulation\, stress resilience\, and behaviour in companion animals. \nIn this webinar\, Ilse Fourie (Elite FFCP-V\, CBCC-KA\, DipCABT\, CertCAB\, MA) will explore what current science tells us about the gut–brain axis in dogs and cats\, and how microbial communities\, immune signalling\, and microbial metabolites interact with the nervous system to shape fear\, anxiety\, and coping capacity. Drawing on recent peer-reviewed research and a Fear Free\, behaviour-first framework\, this session will help veterinary professionals understand how nutrition fits into a truly multi-modal approach to behaviour support. \nThe focus of this talk is on understanding the biology behind behaviour\, and how supporting gut health can complement behaviour modification\, environmental management\, and medical care. \nDisclaimer: This information is exclusively intended for registered veterinary and para-veterinary professionals.

SUMMARY:VETERINARY ASSOCIATION OF NAMIBIA | THRIVE Namibia 2026
DESCRIPTION:Subject: THRIVE Namibia 2026 – Learn to THRIVE\, and not just survive the veterinary profession\nSpeakers: Multiple\nOrganizer: Veterinary Association of Namibia\nVenue: Windhoek\, Namibia\nLINK: REGISTER HERE \nWhy THRIVE Namibia?\nGlobally\, veterinarians have been found to be at increased risk of developing mental health disorders and committing suicide. Male veterinarians are twice as likely and female veterinarians 4 times as likely to die from suicide compared to the general population. \nIn a survey conducted among Namibian Veterinarians\, only 67% could answer with a clear “no” that they have never had suicidal thoughts. Based on these worrying findings\, together with the fact that the small Namibian Veterinary Community has lost one veterinarian and one veterinary student to suicide during the past 10 years\, the Veterinary Association of Namibia is planning this first event of its kind in Namibia. \nThe purpose of this event is to recognise the importance of mental wellbeing\, better equip veterinary professionals to deal with challenges and increase resilience to the stressors of daily life. \nDisclaimer: This information is exclusively intended for registered veterinary and para-veterinary professionals.

SUMMARY:IDEXX | Unusual Endocrine emergencies: they don't have to be a 'crisis'
DESCRIPTION:Subject: Unusual Endocrine emergencies: they don’t have to be a ‘crisis’\nSpeakers: Dr Yvonne McGrotty\nOrganizer: Idexx\nLINK: REGISTER HERE \nPresented by: Yvonne McGrotty BVMS CertSAM DipECVIM-CA MRCVS \nIn this session we will look at some of the less well-known endocrine emergencies in dogs and cats. These include phaeochromocytoma crisis\, insulinoma and euglycaemic ketoacidosis in cats. Failure to promptly identify these uncommon endocrine emergencies can lead to poor patient outcome; it is vital to obtain a definitive diagnosis so that appropriate treatment can be initiated as soon as possible. A brief overview of presenting signs will be followed by a discussion of the appropriate diagnostic steps for each condition\, including clinicopathological testing and imaging. We will also discuss some potential pre-analytical pitfalls and how to avoid them. Stabilisation and emergency treatment protocols will be briefly covered along with prognostic considerations. \nLearning Objectives: \nUnderstand how to diagnose and treat a phaeochromocytoma\nUnderstand how to diagnose and treat an insulinoma\nUnderstand how to diagnose and treat a euglycaemic ketoacidotic crisis. \nDisclaimer: This information is exclusively intended for registered veterinary and para-veterinary professionals.
