SUMMARY:SAVA | JHB Branch: Managing Recurrent Otitis Externa in Dogs
DESCRIPTION:Subject: Managing Recurrent Otitis Externa in Dogs\nSpeaker: Dr Estee van Zyl\nSponsor: MSD\nLINK: REGISTER HERE\n \nIN PERSON EVENT RATES\n(Includes Dinner and Drinks)\nJohannesburg Branch Members – Free\nAll Other participants R325 \nABOUT THE TOPIC:\nTreatment of secondary infections in the ear help manage short- term disease. However\, persistent inflammation and recurring infections lead to chronic changes in the ear canal which make these flares more difficult to control over time. This will eventually lead to irreversible changes in the ear canal which may require surgical intervention. In order to avoid this scenario\, we need to change our approach to the ithcy ear. This talk will highlight the recommendations from a recent review article\, in order to guide our clinical decisions when managing otitis externa in dogs. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER: \nDr Estee van Zyl is a Veterinary Internal Medicine Specialist and Head of the Internal Medicine Department at Fourways Vet Hospital\, where she works alongside two fellow specialists and two dedicated residents. She first joined the hospital in 2014\, quickly finding her calling in internal medicine. She started her Honours modules in 2016\, and then undertook an external residency in 2018 under the guidance of Dr Alain Carter. Estee has a particular passion for managing diabetes in pets and is deeply committed to improving the lives of her patients and supporting their families through complex medical journeys. Outside of work\, she enjoys life with her three lively miniature schnauzers\, who keep her on her toes and remind her daily why she loves her profession.

SUMMARY:IDEXX | September Specialist Webinar - Beyond the CBC: Hematology for the Specialist
DESCRIPTION:Subject: September Specialist Webinar – Beyond the CBC: Hematology for the Specialist\nSpeakers: Dr Rebecca George\nOrganizer: Idexx\nLINK: REGISTER HERE \nDescription: Hematology is an integral part of patient assessment and the minimum database for wellness visits\, sick visits and ongoing disease monitoring. We will have a high-level review about what is included in a full hematology assessment\, including analyzer data\, analyzer graphics and blood morphology. We will integrate our knowledge of a full hematology assessment into patient diagnosis and management. Identifying blood morphologic abnormalities are key for specialists to obtain a diagnosis and provide high level patient care\, especially in the specialty care setting. The goal of this program is to provide a specialist level review of hematologic abnormalities and blood morphology changes that are important to identify. This lecture will also provide an update of IDEXX’s inVue cellular analyzer and it’s role in evaluating blood morphology. \nSpeaker: Dr. Rebecca George earned her DVM from Auburn University and completed a rotating small animal internship at VCA Alameda East in Denver\, CO. She went on to practice as a relief veterinarian at 12 Denver hospitals and participated in an international exchange at the Universidad Austral de Chile. Returning to Auburn\, she completed a Master’s in Biomedical Sciences and a residency in small animal oncology. Her clinical interests include osteosarcoma\, leukemias\, and lymphoma\, with a focus on targeted therapies\, immunotherapy\, and optimizing quality of life for pets with cancer.
