SUMMARY:IDEXX | May Specialist Webinar - Airway Structure and Function in Canine Bronchial Diseases [WATCH RECORDING]
DESCRIPTION:Subject: May Specialist Webinar – Airway Structure and Function in Canine Bronchial Diseases\nSpeakers: Dr Stephan A. Carey\nOrganizer: Idexx\nLINK: WATCH RECORDING \nAirway Structure and Function in Canine Bronchial Diseases with Dr Stephan A. Carey\, DVM\, PhD\, DACVIM \nChronic bronchitis (CB) is the most common chronic respiratory impairment in dogs. The condition is defined as a chronic cough occurring for two consecutive months during the preceding year that is not attributable to another cause (e.g. neoplasia\, congestive heart failure). The early changes are likely triggered by an inciting irritant stimulus\, and include increases in airway mucus production\, impairment of mucociliary clearance\, and alterations in the local immune response. The cascade of events\, if left untreated\, results in a cycle of chronic inflammation\, chronic cough\, copious mucoid airway secretions\, decreased mucociliary clearance\, and hypoxemia. This session will provide the experienced specialist with a detailed review of normal airway structure\, function\, and physiology\, will use this background to emphasize the consequences of the loss of these functions via bronchoscopy and advanced imaging\, and ultimately will offer a rational approach to intervention for chronic bronchitis and its late-stage consequences.

SUMMARY:AFRIVET | Rabies in the sea: Cape fur seals emerge as new maintenance host [WATCH RECORDING]
DESCRIPTION:Subject: Rabies in the sea: Cape fur seals emerge as new maintenance host\nSpeakers: Dr Lesley van Helden\nOrganizer: Afrivet\nLINK: WATCH RECORDING \nIn June 2024\, an outbreak of rabies was detected in Cape fur seals in Cape Town. Since then\, over 70 cases of rabies in Cape fur seals have been confirmed all along the coasts of the Western and Northern Cape Provinces. Sequencing of rabies viruses from the seals show that the outbreak started from a single spillover event from a rabid land mammal\, and transmission is now being maintained within the seal population. The emergence of a new rabies reservoir in the ocean poses challenges for rabies management in animals and people\, both locally and internationally. Dr Lesley van Helden gives an update about the current situation and what vets need to know.

SUMMARY:The Holistic Guide to CBC; Numbers\, Plots and Morphology. Making Sense of Red Cell Profiles
DESCRIPTION:Subject: The Holistic Guide to CBC; Numbers\, Plots and Morphology. Making Sense of Red Cell Profiles\nSpeakers: Dr Dennis DeNicola & Dr Guillermo Couto\nOrganizer: Idexx\nLINK: REGISTER HERE \nPresented by: Dr Dennis DeNicola\, Dr Guillermo Couto (DVM\, dipl. ACVIM – Internal Medicine and Oncology) \nThis will be a case-based review of interpretation of numerical and graphic red blood cell (RBC) parameters\, emphasizing the benefit of in-house analyzers. These will be correlated with the value of RBC morphology in arriving at a diagnosis. We will review how to best utilize HCT\, RBC count\, hemoglobin concentration\, as well as the RBC indices and reticulocyte parameters in dogs and cats. \nWe will also discuss how to squeeze information out of the cytograms. At the end of this webinar\, the attendees will be able to classify anemias as regenerative and non-regenerative\, developing and chronic iron deficiency\, and utilize analyzer cytograms to identify RBC morphologic abnormalities and when a blood film MUST be evaluated microscopically.
