Why THRIVE Namibia?
Globally, veterinarians have been found to be at increased risk of developing mental health disorders and committing suicide. Male veterinarians are twice as likely and female veterinarians 4 times as likely to die from suicide compared to the general population.
In a survey conducted among Namibian Veterinarians, only 67% could answer with a clear “no” that they have never had suicidal thoughts. Based on these worrying findings, together with the fact that the small Namibian Veterinary Community has lost one veterinarian and one veterinary student to suicide during the past 10 years, the Veterinary Association of Namibia is planning this first event of its kind in Namibia.
The purpose of this event is to recognise the importance of mental wellbeing, better equip veterinary professionals to deal with challenges and increase resilience to the stressors of daily life.
