Dr Anthea Michaletos is an emergency and critical care clinician who completed an MSc focused on acid–base balance and residency training through the European College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. She enjoys the fast-paced nature of ECC, particularly managing critically ill patients that require rapid decision-making and close monitoring. Her clinical interests include ventilation, trauma and endocrine emergencies.
This CPD talk will focus on the approach to cardiac emergencies presenting to the emergency room and ICU, with emphasis on distinguishing cardiac from respiratory causes of acute clinical signs. It will explore practical clinical decision-making and the use of point-of-care ultrasound as an essential tool to rapidly support diagnosis, guide initial management, and stabilise critically ill patients. The session aims to provide simple, usable “bedside” techniques and diagnostic tips to improve confidence in managing acute cardiopulmonary cases.
