HILL’S | Webinar #4: CKD, Phosphorus & Calcium: A Complex Relationship

Thursday 14 May @ 19:30 - 21:00

Subject: CKD, Phosphorus & Calcium: A Complex Relationship
Speaker: Dr Lisa Restine
Organizer: Hill’s Pet Nutrition
LINK:  REGISTER HERE

To register for this webinar, you will now need to log in to the Hill’s Veterinary Academy (HVA) Platform.
To register, users will need to sign into HVA and navigate to the “Register for Live Events” tab.

This presentation explores the pathophysiology and management of feline chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorder (CKD-MBD), focusing on the complex relationship between phosphorus, calcium, and hormones like fibroblas growth factor-23 (FGF-23) and parathyroid hormone.
As kidney function declines, phosphorus retention triggers an increase in FGF-23 and a decrease in calcitriol, eventually leading to renal secondary hyperparathyroidism and potential complications such as soft tissue mineralization or decreased bone density.
Management strategies emphasize early diagnostic assessment using FGF-23 as a predictive marker and implementing nutritional interventions, such as phosphorus-restricted renal diets and the strategic use of phosphate binders to maintain serum phosphorus within target ranges.
This presentation highlights the importance of regular nutritional assessments and monitoring ionized calcium and phosphorus levels to prevent or address issues like hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia during management.

Dr Lisa Restine
BSAS, DVM, Dipl. ABVP (Feline)
Lisa grew up in New Jersey, USA where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Rutgers University. She later received her DVM degree from Western University of Health Sciences in Southern California in 2014. Since graduation, Dr Restine had been practicing feline medicine exclusively at a cat- only practice in San Antonio, Texas where she achieved board certification with the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in feline medicine, in 2020. In 2022, she started working at an ER/Specialty Center and practiced on both dogs and cats in an emergency setting. Her real passion, however, is feline medicine, and she has dedicated many hours to lecturing other veterinarians on both a national and international level as well as being a co-editor of a veterinary feline textbook. Outside of work, Lisa has a strong interest in all things active – she is often found running or hiking and is currently enjoying the challenge of training for a marathon. Caring for her five cats Gandalf, Ruby, Macklin, Deku, and Minerva takes up the rest of her time. Dr Restine is passionate about sharing her love of practice and knowledge to help improve feline care.
