Serum progesterone measurement has become an accessible and widely used tool in small animal practice. It can assist the general practitioner in identifying conditions such as ovarian remnants, pyometra and stump pyometra, as well as guiding breeding management and the timing of elective Caesarean section.
However, like all laboratory diagnostics, progesterone results must be interpreted in the context of the patient’s history and clinical findings. A single number on a laboratory report can easily create client pressure, diagnostic uncertainty, and occasionally clinical confusion.
In this practical webinar, specialist veterinarian Dr Geoff Brown explores how progesterone testing can be used effectively in everyday practice. Using real clinical scenarios, he discusses what progesterone results actually tell us, what they don’t, and how they should be interpreted alongside the clinical picture.
Along the way, the discussion briefly touches on the broader principles underlying diagnostic testing, using progesterone as an example of how laboratory results should be integrated with clinical reasoning.
This session is designed for the conscientious general practitioner who wants a clear and practical framework for interpreting progesterone results in everyday practice.
