Subject: Beyond the Brain: How Gut Health Influences Emotional well being in Pets
Speaker: Ilse Fourie

In recent years, the gut microbiome has emerged as an important biological system influencing not only physical health, but also emotional regulation, stress resilience, and behaviour in companion animals.
In this webinar, Ilse Fourie (Elite FFCP-V, CBCC-KA, DipCABT, CertCAB, MA) will explore what current science tells us about the gut–brain axis in dogs and cats, and how microbial communities, immune signalling, and microbial metabolites interact with the nervous system to shape fear, anxiety, and coping capacity. Drawing on recent peer-reviewed research and a Fear Free, behaviour-first framework, this session will help veterinary professionals understand how nutrition fits into a truly multi-modal approach to behaviour support.
The focus of this talk is on understanding the biology behind behaviour, and how supporting gut health can complement behaviour modification, environmental management, and medical care.
