This presentation will address common gastrointestinal disorders that are treated with antibiotics. The dysbiosis index will be introduced and described and current research studies that show the short and longer term impact of antibiotics on the gastrointestinal microbiome will be presented. Alternative therapeutic approaches including nutrition will be presented.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand which gastrointestinal disorders have historically been treated with antibiotics and how that treatment affects the intestinal microbiome
2. Learn about the dysbiosis index and how it can be used to understand the current status of the intestinal microbiome
3. Understand how nutrition can be used as a primary intervention in gastrointestinal disorders and how using nutrition impacts the gastrointestinal microbiome
